Case study: Asset inspection using a UAV (drone)

The problem

The Department of Education needed to conduct an assessment of an historic slate roof on a central Victorian primary school, but the task was difficult. The fragile slate could not be walked on and scaffolding was too costly.

How we helped

CV Aerial Photography produced an accurate, detailed and informative asset inspection via drone. This saved time and money for the client, leaving them with more funds to carry out the much-needed repairs to this beautiful historic building.

  • The drone pilot took direction from the professional roof repairers, who were viewing the drone’s live high definition streaming video on a 28-inch monitor in a mobile station on the ground.
  • The Department ended up with detailed images pinpointing exactly which tiles were damaged as well as the specific nature of the damage. The images are very high resolution, meaning that the professional repairers could zoom in to see each individual tile.
  • Once the repairs have been carried out, CV Aerial Photography will return to photograph the result, to ensure the repairs have been properly completed.
